Project: A custom-built deck around a beautiful, mature backyard gum tree.
We recently completed a unique and rewarding project for a client who wanted to transform an underutilised section of their backyard. At the centre of the space stood a beautiful, mature gum tree — a striking feature, but one that made it difficult to establish a lawn or garden beneath due to its heavy shade and extensive root system.
Rather than fighting against nature, the client chose to make the tree a focal point. They asked us to design and construct a circular timber deck around the trunk, creating a usable and attractive area that highlights the tree’s natural beauty.
To complement the new deck, the client added a natural water feature beside it, complete with a running stream and bush rocks. Together, the timber deck and water feature have turned what was once a barren patch into a peaceful retreat.
Now, instead of struggling with dry soil and sparse growth, the owners can enjoy a shady, cool space in summer where they can sit back, relax, and listen to the sound of running water and native birds in the branches above. What was previously wasted garden space has become a standout feature of the backyard, blending practicality with natural charm.
