A sympathetic art deco renovation at iconic Manly Beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Extensive apartment renovation at Manly.

This project involved the entire refurbishment and renovation of 90 year old apartment at Manly Beach on the Northern Beaches Sydney.

In original condition, the unit was located in one of Manly’s iconic art deco buildings. The owner was keen to retain many of the original features while undertaking a contemporary renovation that was more conducive to 21st-century living.

We worked with the client throughout the process, project managing the renovation from start to finish. During the renovation, the clients lived in Newcastle and we gave them progress updates daily. We sourced and purchased all products from a range of regular and new suppliers.

Stage 1 – Reconfiguration of the unit layout

The first step was to remove any fixtures and fittings that weren’t being retained. Due to the building’s age there was evidence of fibro which had to be removed according to state regulations.

We demolished the original bathroom, removed a wall and installed a new one to increase its size by encroaching into the spacious living room.

New windows also needed to be installed as the original timber sash windows were nearly rotted out.

Stage 2 – Art deco pressed ceiling restoration

Possibly one of the most exciting and rewarding parts of the art deco unit restoration was to remove the old pressed tin ceiling and replace it with a new one that was made to accurately match the original.

The result was spectacular and the owner was suitably impressed. The new ceiling will now last for many, many years to come.

Stage 3 – Unit rewiring

While all the above work was being undertaken, our electrician worked on rewiring the entire unit. Also in original condition, the 90 year old wiring was in desperate need of replacement to ensure it could safely handle our 21st century technology needs.

Stage 4 – Fit out with kitchen and bathroom renovation

The final stage of this Manly unit renovation was to install the new kitchen and bathroom renovation.

New engineered oak flooring was laid in the living area and carpet in the bedrooms. New doors, decorative timber skirting boards, door and window frames installed. The original sash windows had nearly rotted out so we installed new windows. A large, custom-designed, double linen press was integrated into the new bathroom wall.

And finally, we patched any damaged original render and the entire unit was repainted.
